I Am... Yours: An Intimate Performance at Wynn Las Vegas
I Am... Yours: An Intimate Performance at Wynn Las Vegas is a live CD/DVD by American R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles. It was shot at the Encore Theater, Las Vegas, on August 2, 2009 during a stint of her worldwide I Am... Tour (2009-2010). It features performances of over 30 songs, including Knowles' solo material, her collaborations with Destiny's Child as well as behind-the-scenes footage. The album was available in a DVD and a 2 CD/DVD Deluxe format on November 23 and Blu-ray format on December 15. Footage from the release aired on ABC on November 26, 2009.
Upon its release, I Am... Yours: An Intimate Performance at Wynn Las Vegas received mostly positive reviews from music critics who generally praised the acoustic live performances of the songs. Knowles' vocals, the intimate performances and the narrating story of the album were also praised. The live version of "Halo" (2009), which is featured on the album, was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 53rd Grammy Awards.
The live album stayed for 8 weeks at the top of the US Billboard Top Music Video chart, being certified 2× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipment of over 200,000 copies. It became Knowles' first number one DVD in the USA and it has spent 52 weeks on the chart. The album was also successful on the other charts across the world and it was certified platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) and 2× platinum by the Associação Brasileira dos Produtores de Discos (ABPD).
Background
In early November, 2009, it was announced that Knowles would be releasing her first concert performance DVD and live CD on November 23 titled I Am... Yours: An Intimate Performance at Wynn Las Vegas.[1][2] The DVD features performances filmed at the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas on August 2, 2009 during a stint on Knowles' worldwide I Am... Tour (2009-2010) titled I Am... Yours. It features performances of over 30 songs, including Knowles' solo material as well as her collaborations with Destiny's Child.[1][2] Exclusive behind-the-scenes footage were also placed on the album.[1][2] Some of the behind-the-scenes footage of I Am... Yours were later placed on Knowles' album Live at Roseland: Elements of 4 (2011).[3] According to Music World Entertainment president/CEO Matthew Knowles, the decision to release I Am... Yours: An Intimate Performance at Wynn Las Vegas was due to the way the music was presented in the digital world and because "the live experience is becoming more important".[4] He added that the live performances show the ability of the artists to entertain live, something that according to him, "Knowles has proven that time after time".[4]
Release and promotion
The album was available in a DVD and a 2 CD/DVD Deluxe Edition on November 23 and Blu-ray on December 15.[1][2] The DVD and Blu-ray editions feature the entire concert (split into three parts), as well as over 23 minutes of behind the scenes footage, while the two CDs include only the audio from the main performances.[1][2] On November 26, 2009, ABC Network aired a one-hour television special called "Beyoncé - I Am... Yours" at 9:00 PM/EST.[1][2][4][5] A one-minute trailer of the special was posted online on November 12, 2009.[6][7] The special showed Knowles' during her I Am... Tour, behind-the-scenes footage including rehearsals, as well as personal videos.[8] According to USA Today, the special was watched by 5.2 million viewers.[9] Entertainment Weekly's Brad Wete said that she was "danc[ing] her tail off" during the special.[10]
Reception
Critical reception
Allmusic's Andy Kellman awarded I Am... Yours with four out of five stars.[11] He called the album a "theatrical production worthy of Vegas, with Beyoncé and her large backing band energetically rolling [through Knowles' songs]."[11] Kellman further noted that "what makes I Am...Yours stand apart from a typical live-album cash-in is the mostly unexpected covers that are weaved into the set."[11] He finished his review by writing, "As live albums go, this is not quite destined to be one of those all-time classics; a couple missing songs and a little too much talk aside, however, the fans couldn’t ask for more."[11] Ed Masley of The Arizona Republic praised the intimacy of the concert and the acoustic versions of the songs.[15] A writer of The Boston Globe gave a positive review for the album, comparing it with Sin City. He further praised the jazz interlude, the acoustic rearrangements of the song, and the "charming B[eyoncé] telling her life story in [the] song[s]."[16] Mike Diver of BBC Online reviewed the album positively praising the narrating story of the performances calling it "polished, [and] professional".[12] Diver further noted that Knowles' vocals, "peak and dip, tremble and roar, mercifully without ever hitting Mariah Carey levels of skull-rattling intensity".[12] He also wrote that the album would look predictable because it was an "entirely second-guessable affair with each movement telegraphed and every realigned arrangement (bombast turned down, jazz and funk switched up) meeting the listener’s expectations head on."[12]
Grading the album with A- and calling the I Am... Yours the "best live concert film of the year", David Burger of The Salt Lake Tribune concluded, "Instead of a traditional retread of her hits, she narrates and emotionally sings her way through a souful musical journey that takes her from her first audition song to the mega-hits she unleashed this past year... This is a thrilling tour de force."[14] A writer of Eye Weekly called the album "extraordinary" and added that it's "the chance to experience her [Knowles] up close and personal".[17] Nate Chinen of The New York Times noted that the album documents a smaller show than the other Knowles' usually makes. He further stated, "But the stagecraft — wind machines, lasers, arena lighting — keeps a viewer at a worshipful remove... Of course Beyoncé has always fared better with declaration than with disclosure, framing her sentiments as actions. Still, the old-fashioned extravagance of this production, which she conceived and choreographed with Frank Gatson Jr., feels like some kind of honesty: it’s a sincere gesture from a show-business savant."[13] The live performance of "Halo" (2009), which is featured on the album, was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 53rd Grammy Awards.[18][19] It additionally charted at number 58 on the Canadian Hot 100.[20][21]
Chart performance
The live album became the best selling DVD in the U.S. from its first week. The second week, it fell to number 2, but climbed again to the top where it stayed for the next 7 weeks. It has spent 10 weeks inside the top 5 (8 of them at the top). In 2009, I Am... Yours sold 99,000 copies in the US, making it the sixth best-selling music DVD of the year.[22] As of December 29, 2010 It had sold 162,000 units in the US, and ranked at number 15 on the year-end chart of 2010.[22]
